Kukke Subramanya Temple – Accomodation and Travel

with 198 comments

I see that there are quite a few hits to my blog on Kukke Subramanya Temple. Of course, most people get to the page wanting to know how to reach Kukke and where to stay. Which means my writeup is a completely useless article for them. So, here I go in my attempt to be of some use to the devotees of Kukke Subramanya.

Accomodation: There are quite a few guest houses at Kukke. Ashlesha, Karthikeya, Kumarakrupa and Skandakrupa are few of them. Courtesy this site, the phone number for booking rooms is 281224 or 281400. The STD code for Kukke is 08257. There is another lodge called as the Sriniketana lodge which is also pretty reasonable. I do not have the number but the folks from the other lodges should be able to provide the same.

Travel: The road through Shiradi ghats and through Charmadi ghats (through Mysore-Madikeri-Puttur) are both horrible. And I can’t see them being repaired any time soon. Traveling on one’s own vehicle could be a nightmare. The best option, according to, is to take a KSRTC Rajahamsa bus from Bangalore overnight. Its really convenient. Plus you can book two way tickets online.

In case you are not able to book accomodation and have to reach Kukke (with family), the better thing to do would be to land up in Dharmasthala and take an accomodation there. There are multiple guest houses available there and chances of obtaining one are brighter. Dharmasthala to Kukke is about 60KMs and you can cover it in less than 2 hours plus there are lots of public transport buses available.

P.S: I am now even more convinced about what I wrote a few days ago over here. Two weeks ago, Nitin and I landed up in Kukke. Nitin wanted to go there and I was his guide 🙂 Hoovina jothe naaru swarga serithu!

Route

From Bangalore :- Bangalore – Nelamangala – Kunigal – Chennarayapatna – Hassan – Sakleshpura – Gundya Junction – (left turn on NH48) – Subramanya. Approximate distance is 280kms. Road quality is (a) excellent till Sakleshpura, (b) bad then onwards.

From Mysore :- Mysore – Hunsur – Periyapatna – Kushalnagara – Madikeri – Sampaje – Puttur – Subramanya. Approximate distance is 220kms. Road quality is average.

Update:  As of March/April 2008, the Shiradi Ghats section between Sakleshapura and Gundya (near Kukke) has significantly improved. Work is progressing at a rapid rate. Out of the 45kms, almost 30kms is very good. You will have to travel a little slow in the remaining 15kms. I managed it in a Honda City which has one of the lowest ground clearances. So you can imagine!

Update: See some photos of the road and Shiradi ghats as of July 2008

Update (January 2009):

Found this excellent website with complete and useful information on the temple. Click here.

  3. Nitin,

A literal translation would be “Along with the flowers, the thread (used to make the garland) also reached heaven (God)”

  5. The translation though means that the thread used to make garland also reached the heavens along with the flowers, the actual meaning to be construed is that if you are in the company of good people you will also get good returns.

  12. Dear Hari,
Thanks for such a lovely post. I am also planning to go to Subramanya in this week. I am still at large as to how to reach the place. I have travelled recently ( 2months back ) to Mangalore through Shirady ghat and it was quite good except a few bad patches.
To reach to Subramanya, where should i take left from the NH to get the best and the shortest route and you should 15 kms is bad …so which section are you talking about.

After searching through google maps, mapmyindia.com i have these three four routes. Pls suggest which one to take

    1. NH48–Saklespur–( take left on Nh 48 )Haldahalli–Hethur—Subramanya

    2. NH48-Saklespur–heggadae–( take left on Nh 48 , just before Shirady)–)–Komabaru –Billinele–Subramanya

    3. NH48–Saklespur–Shirady—( take left on Nh 48 )–Noojibalthia–Kutrupadi–Bantra–Aithoor–Subramanya

    4. NH48–Saklespur–Shirady-uppinagady—(take left on NH 48)–Koila-Alankara–kadaba-Aithoor–Sumbramanya

Out of these four, which one did you take, whats the total distance that one has to travel after taking left on NH48. I am travelling on Alto.
    Pls reply soon.

    Thanks

  13. Dear Neeraj,

My suggestion to you is to ignore the details that you found on that site. From Sakleshpur, continue on the highway for about 48-50 kilometres. You will reach a junction called “Gundya”. There is a checkpost at that junction – so you will find many lorries and trucks there. Perpendicular to the highway, you will find a small road to the left (so its a T-shaped junction). There are also quite a few shops at the junction. Take that turn and go 22kms. You will reach Subramanya.

It is very difficult to miss that junction 🙂 as it is bound to be your first exposure to civilization after 50kms in one of the World Bio-Diversity Hotspots.

    Hope that helps.
    Regards, Hari

  14. Thanks for such a quick reply Hari, So when you say 15kms is bad, so is it this 22 Kms stretch after I take the left turn from Gundya thats real bad.

    Regards
    Neeraj

    Neeraj

    June 2, 2008 at 3:42 pm

  15. No no, a small portion of the 50kms on the highway is still bad, when I last heard about it (sometime last week).

The 22kms is almost completely in good condition. But in the ghats, you never know 🙂

BTW, the monsoon will hit the ghats any day now. Do take enough care and ensure you drive only during daytime.

    Regards, Hari

  16. Thanks a ton Hari. I will update here once I am back.

  17. hello hari,
one of my relatives is planning to visit kukke for “Nagara pratishtapane” in the month of october.
    they will travel from chennai,
please give me details as to how i can make arrangements for them to reach kukke..
if they come till mangalore, what are the best options, since they do not speak kannada, they speak only tamil, i need your help in finding reliable taxi people from mangalore to kukke and back.
can you please let me know how long is the journey from mangalore to kukke?
since i am also not in bangalore to make the arrangements, i would like to know the details from you and then accordingly direct them or make bookings for them..
please help, you can also send me an offline mail.
look forward to hearing from you..

    June 16, 2008 at 9:37 am

  18. Hello Veena,

If they are coming through Bangalore, taking a bus directly to Kukke (from Blr) would be best. Else, they can reach Mangalore and take a bus from there. Taxi would be an unnecessary expenditure. I can confidently claim that the transport system in Mangalore/Udupi is the best in India.

There are regular buses to Kukke from the KSRTC bus stand in Mangalore (which is where state transport buses from Chennai/Bangalore would land).

Or better still, they can reach the private bus stand (Hampankatta Bus Stand – about 2kms away from the KSRTC bus stand) and they will find tons of private buses to Kukke.

Kukke is about 100kms from Mangalore. If they still want to hire a taxi, it shouldn’t be an issue as Tamil works in Mangalore!

    Hope this helps.
    – Regards, Hari

  19. Hari , Thank You for the wonderful post and the great service you are providing to reders like me. I am planning to be in Bangalore for a few weeks with my family in the first two weeks of August. Would that be a good time ( say first week of August ) to visit Subramanya and get darshan ? Would the monsoons make travel difficult ? . If we can go , I would perhaps rent a car and go.

Your help is very much appreciated ( and you will get a share of our punya if we do visit Subramanya ). THANK YOU.

    July 10, 2008 at 9:42 pm

  20. Dear Prakash,

    Thanks for your appreciative comments.

During August, you can expect a *LOT* of rain but its also the best time to visit Kukke if you love greenery and nature. The Shiradi ghats road from Bangalore to Mangalore have been reopened. From what I hear, the road is of excellent quality now.

Since its monsoon time, you should probably keep a bit of time at hand when planning the journey, in case there are delays. I do not see any other problems.

Hope you make it to Kukke during your trip. And any excess punya is always welcome 🙂

  21. Dear Hari,
My friend wishes to visit kukke subramanya temple with his family from kumta (Karwar district) to perform aslesha bali at the temple. He wants to know about the minimum expenditure about the pooja procedure mentioned above. Should he book or register his name at the temple office prior to his visit to the temple.
    with regards,
    Rajendra Pandit.

    July 14, 2008 at 6:51 pm

  22. Dear Rajendra,

I think Ashlesha Bali costs a few hundred rupees. But I am not sure if you required to stay there for more than a day. It may be so. The temple phone number is available in one of the comments above. I suggest that you call them and confirm the schedule.

Since “Samoohika” Ashlesha Bali is done, I do not think prior booking is necessary. Once you obtain the information through phone, request you to update us through a comment. It will benefit others.

  23. Hi Hari,
Thank u for the info. Its great. I and my wife have to travel to Subramanyam Temple (is Kukke and Subramanyam temples same..?) and also visit Dharamsthala before this. We plan to do in August or Sept. As we’ll be leaving or bringing along smallkids..pls advise best routes from Chennai. Will a train from Chennai to M’lore and a TAXI from there be good..? Can we do both temples in a day (without much trouble) and head back by night train..? Pls advise..? U may also copy me on my email gitesh.mail@gmail.com.
    Regards, Gitesh

    From Chennai

    July 27, 2008 at 8:40 pm

  24. Dear Gitesh,

September onwards should be better from rain point of view. Right now, it would be messy for a first-timer.

A single day for both places is going to get tight. You will need more than 5 hours just for the travel from Mangalore and back (and yes, train to Mlore and then taxi would be a very good option). Depending on the day you visit (and your luck), you may have to spend a few hours waiting for the darshan at both temples. Therefore, keeping two days on the whole would be much better.

    HTH.

Quite an interesting website. I came across your website while searching for kukke subramanya contact no
do you have any information on sarpa dosha pooja performed at the temple

  27. Hello Leela,

The only pieces of information I have is that it is performed over two days and is, in a ritualistic sense, equivalent to the “Shraddha” performed for the “Pitrus”.

The link below has more information. It may help you.

  28. Hi Hari,

Firstly, i want to thank you for all the information you have provided here.

we are planning to go to Kukke Subramanya and Dharmasthala (Darshan on this 18th, Monday) from Bangalore.

Our plan is to travel from Bangalore to Subramanya, after darshan head towards Dharmasthala and return Subramanya by evening or late evening to catch Yesvanthpur Exp at Subramanya at 10PM.

Do you think its possible, both temples in the same day ?

Or you suggest us to arrive at Subramanya the day before ?

what i thought is, if one makes it in the 1st batch of Abhishekam. we will have good amount of time to travel Dharmasthala.

Lastly, do we need to book any tickets …Darshan, Abhishekam in advance ?

please share me your thoughts on it.

    thanks in advance

    August 9, 2008 at 11:36 pm

  29. Dear Bhavani Sankar,

The plan you have prepared looks a little tight. By the time you finish Darshan at Subramanya, it could be well be past 11AM. The journey to Dharmasthala takes more than 90 minutes. Which means that the temple at Dharmasthala could be closed for Darshan. As far as I can remember, the temple re-opens well past 6PM and depending upon the queue, it will take a while for Darshan.

I suggest you take the second plan about reaching Subramanya one day in advance. You can finish Darshan by evening and leave for Dharmasthala early in the morning the next day.

On the other hand, if you are not too keen on taking the train, covering Dharmasthala first and reaching Subramanya in the afternoon is also a good idea. You can have darshan at Subramanya in the evening and take the night bus back to Bangalore.

    HTH!

  30. Hi Hari,

I really appreciate your quick response !

Actually, we are planning to enter in 1st batch of Abhishekam at 4 or 4:30 AM on Monday at Subramanya.
(my brother has to participate in that)
Also heard that, Abhishekam will be done only in mornings in 2 batches one at 6:30AM and another at around 9AM.

I think that will be possible, only if we can reach Subramanya the evening of day before as I dont see any bus/train from bangalore arrives before 4AM.

    Thanks

As I have a adorable lab with me I am planning to reach Mysore, leave my dog in my in-laws and then go to Subramanya via Madikeri. I have been suggested to perform Guru Rahu Kethu Shanthi, Sarpa Samskara, Ashlesha Bali and Naga Prathisthe. I am not sure how many days will it take to perform all these pooja. Can you or any one help me out in this. I am planning to visit by mid week of September.

  35. Dear Hari

I have found your blog and website while trying to search for the kukke temple. My wife and I want to visit the temple. We are currently in Pune.

Want answers to the following questions. Pls help in answering them. Gratefull to you if you provide details

    1. From Pune ; is there a train that goes directly to a station of Kukke Temple

2.If there is no direct train; we were planning to go to Bangalore. Do i take a KSRTS bus or a private car to go to the temple

    3. I am preferring a car so that we can enjoy the valley. Is it safe based on the road conditions and weather

    4. Need to perform Naga dosha puja; does it take 2 complete days to perform the same. I am planning to start friday night pune and return back sunday night back to pune. will there be much rush.

    4. Is there any advance booking for the Naga dosha pooja and if we have to do a regular visit; how much time does it take to get regular darshan or abhishekam.

Pls reply soon as we want to plan the trip this month itself.

  36. Namaskara,

    >>From Pune ; is there a train that goes directly to a station of Kukke Temple

Honestly, I don’t know. My guess is that none of the trains follow this route.

    >>If there is no direct train; we were planning to go to Bangalore. Do i take a KSRTS bus or a private car to go to the temple

Car journey is much more enjoyeable, except for the driver 🙂 KSRTC buses are very efficient.

    >>I am preferring a car so that we can enjoy the valley. Is it safe based on the road conditions and weather

As long as you travel during the day, safety is not an issue. The road is bumpy and the weather is increasingly getting better, I am told.

    >>Need to perform Naga dosha puja; does it take 2 complete days to perform the same. I am planning to start friday night pune and return back sunday night back to pune. will there be much rush.

This I can confidently say is not possible. Even if you were based in Bangalore, this schedule looks tight. You need at least a couple of more days.

    >>Is there any advance booking for the Naga dosha pooja and if we have to do a regular visit; how much time does it take to get regular darshan or abhishekam

I don’t advance booking is needed. Regular darshan will take a maximum of two hours (if there is heavy crowd).

    Hope that helps!

  37. Dear Hari,

Its nice to know of your fantastic help to ppl around the country who wud wanna visit Subramanya. I am planning a visit to Kukke then to Dharmastala-Mangalore-Udpi-Kokke-Gokarna-Goa. ( From Chennai-Bangalore-Hassan- Kokke). A total of 8 days trip. My doubt is we are a family of 4. Looking at the conditions of the road cud u please guide me on which vehicle to take – my options are Skoda(Laura) or Innova. My 1st preference is Skoda, as I preffer driving it than the Innova on long trips and for sure is a safer and sturdier vehicle than Innova. But looking at the different blogs it has put me into confusion on which to take. Can u help me please…..and at the same time cud u tell me how the roads wud be during Oct 20th around. And how long does it take for darshan at Kokke ( Just a regular Darshan). Since I plan to leave From Hassan at the early hours(5 am) and reach Kokke by 7am ( may be 2 to 2and half hrs drive ?) and wud it be possible for us to leave Kokke by 8.30 and reach Dharmastala by 11.30 ?.

    Anurag

    September 13, 2008 at 2:07 pm

  38. Dear Anurag,

Not only the road between Hassan and Kukke, but also the stretch between Kukke and Mangalore and Mangalore-Udupi is *very* badly damaged. Innova is a safer bet any day.

The rains should have completely stopped by mid-Oct but the road should still be below average. The sceneries and atmosphere will more than make up for it, don’t worry 🙂

About the darshan time at Kukke, it is really impossible to predict. On a weekday, it should be over quickly. I still suggest keeping at least 2 hours at hand. BTW, Hassan to Kukke in 2 hours is impossible 🙂 You need at least 3.5 hours. My guess is that you will miss Dharmasthala in the afternoon and will have wait till evening. You need to keep 24 hours for Kukke – Dharmasthala.

    Hope that helps.

  43. Dear Anil,

I don’t know all that much about Chikmagaluru but the route you have mentioned looks good. All the places in Chimagalur should be within a 30-40km radius.

From Shringeri, you should be able to get to Karkala and then to Dharmasthala (about 150-170kms, I guess). But, Udupi is also close by to Shringeri. Do think of including it in your itinerary.

Kukke – Shringeri should be more than 200kms (again, am not sure).

  52. thnks for the reply , Hari. How is the bisle ghat route from donigal in sakleshpur. and do u mean to say, it is next to impossible to drive on shiradi ghats

    Pradeep

    September 23, 2008 at 9:33 am

  53. Hi Pradeep,

I do not know about the condition of the Bisle route.

I heard horror stories about the Shiradi ghats road. They have laid thick concrete blocks at several places during the repair. I believe the asphalt at the joints (between the concrete stretch and regular road) has completely come off. These junctions are essentially craters more than 1-2 ft deep.

I was told that the Volvo bus drivers had to stop at every such junction, “fill” the craters with large stones and then “climb” the road.

I would strongly advise against this road.

  56. Hi Hari,
We are from Bangalore and wish to visit (drive down) this temple next week or weekend of Deepavali. Though I searched on the web, I did not find any good stay place near by… I have two questions and it would be really great if you could help me with answers.

    – Are there any good places around Kukke so that we could stay there for two or three days. For darshan alone, it may not take more than a day right?
    – Any good suggestion in terms of stay? We (two families) are having toddlers and babies and hence would like to have a very comfortable stay…

    Thank you very much sir,

  62. Namaskara Sri Karthik,

If you can get hold of a priest in a Subramanya temple and get upadesha of the Subramanya Moola Mantra (Om Namo Bhagavate Kamarupine…..) and chant it regularly in the morning, it will be best remedy for Kuja Dosha.

On the other hand, there may be some Prasidda mantras for Subramanya. Let me check and get back.

  63. Hi Hari,

Thank you for your great service..! My Mom, my brother & his family are now in Sri Kukke Subrahmanya. Yesterday they took Bangalore-Mysore-Madikeri-Sulya route and found it *horrible*. After Dharshan/Seva, they are planning to return to Bangalore tomorrow(05th Nov.08). Please advice me which is the better route as of now (via Shiradi ghats or Madikeri-Mysore-Bangalore ?)
A quick feedback would be very much appreciated. Thank you once again.

  64. Namaskara Sridhar,

I know the Madikeri-Mysore road is bad. Had driven on the same a month ago. But I have heard that Shiradi Ghats is even worse.

I returned from Mangalore over the weekend and the Volvo buses did not dare take the Shiradi route!

My vote would be for the Madikeri-Mysore route 🙂

  65. Namaskara Hari avare,

Thank you so much for your prompt response. On return from Kukke Subrahmanya to Bangalore today, my Brother & family took the Shiradi route because of the *horrible* experience they had via the Madikeri route during onward journey day before. By comparison they found Shirdi route far better (except for ~15 KM bad stretch at the ghats) compared to Madikeri route (which has become worse for around 50-70 KM stretch and overall longer too in distance).
This latest status on routes may be of help to those who are planning their trip to Sri Kukke Subrahmanya in the near future.

Thank you once again and keep up this great service.

  70. Hello All,

I happened to contact one poojari about 1.5 months back and had booked for pujas on Nov 10 & 11, 2008. He had asked me to call & confirm the bookings 3 days before the puja dates. When I called him on Nov 7 to confirm the bookings, the man says that I booked pujas on Nov 13th & 14th. He dint even listen to my pleas and blindly kept disconnecting my call in the middle of the conversation.

I have also booked the hotel rooms for which I have made an advance payment through a DD and also booked for transportation now. Can anyone email me & let me know if I could contact any person there to have the pujas as scheduled? I have called the above given temple number and they dint seem of any help to me.

I also happened to hear about one, Mr. Venkat Raju who could help me out there but I do not have his contact information. Could you guys please help me out with this?

Me & family are planning to reach Kukke early AM (by train from Bangalore) on Dec 31st, complete darshan/pooja and then proceed to Dharmasthala. Is it practical to plan to reach Mangalore the same night? Also, does the travel from Kukke-Dharmasthala-Mangalore involve ghat roads & how’s the ride? i have toddlers 5 & 2 yrs travelling with me.
    Thank you, satish

    Satish

    December 2, 2008 at 6:44 pm

  76. Namaskara Satish,

It should be comfortable reaching Dharmasthala same day. In fact, if you finish lunch at Kukke, you can plan reaching Dharmasthala by evening so you can have darshan there also (7PM onwards).

The distance between Kukke and Dharmasthala is around 60kms and does not involve ghats. The ride should be ok. Same with road to Mangalore from Dharmasthala but road condition could be below average.

    Hope that helps.

I am planning to come to Mangalore from Chennai on the 5th of January 2009. I would like to visit Kollur (Moogambiga temple), Dharmasthala, Subramanya and Udupi. Will one day be enough to cover these places or we will need more time? Can you suggest how should I go to these places from Mangalore. Will hiring a taxi help in reaching the places on time. I am planning for return journey by West Coast Express to Chennai on the 7th (if one day is not enough to cover all the four places. Please reply to me to my mail ID.

Thanks in advance and hats off to you for the excellent service you are doing to everyone.

    S. Srinivasan

    December 4, 2008 at 2:28 pm

  78. Namaskara Srinivasan,

You need at least 3 half days for covering the four places you mention. Two days would be more comfortable. Udupi – Kollur is one segment. Dharmasthala – Kukke is another. Udupi is 60km from Mangalore northwards. Kollur is around 30km from Udupi further north. Dharmasthala is 80km from Mangalore towards east. Kukke is 60km from Dharmasthala.

From Mangalore, I suggest you use the local bus service to Udupi and Kollur. They are excellent.

Even for Dharmasthala and Kukke, you can use local buses but hiring a taxi is also good if comfort is a concern.

    Hope that helps.

  80. The best way i think is to stay in Sakleshpur. Leave bangalore at 3 PM, reach Sakleshpur at 8 PM, stay there. Early morning 6 AM would be a great drive to Kukke Subramanya – 52 kms from Sakleshpur and you will be fresh in the morning when you reach Kukke.

I am not sure of the exact distance between Sringeri and Kukke but I think you can reach Dharmasthala from Sringeri and then reach Kukke. I think you need a minimum of 5 hours at hand for this journey.

You need not really worry about the bus service. Tulu Nadu is really very well connected. I am sure you will find buses from Sringeri to Dharmasthala (maybe even directly to Kukke) quite frequently.

  90. hi,
this site is really useful to first time travellers.
just needed to know….from pune, the distance to kukke is approx 750 kms…the route to follow apparently is pune-goa and then goa-mangalore(nh 17) to kukke.
is it a good idea to directly go to kukke and stay there if we don’t really want to do mangalore? is that possible as regards the quality of accomodation available at kukke?
i read a few blogs of ppl who started very early in the morning around 4am, and did the journey pune-mangalore in one day, reaching mangalore by 7pm…do u think this is possible ?
otherwise we will unnececssarily have to stay the night somewhere midway and lose precious time…we have to return in 3 days bk to pune and are only going for darshan, not to perform any puja or anything.
    thnx

    December 17, 2008 at 11:39 am

    • Hi,

Kukke has above average accommodation available in guest houses. The numbers are available in the comments above. I suggest you call them in advance to ensure accommodation is available. Since you have limited time at hand, staying at Kukke is the better thing to do.

Regarding covering the distance in one day, I think it depends on the quality of the vehicle and driving. The road though is mostly in very good condition.

    2) what’s the distance like, between nh17 and mangalore incase we have to cross it?

    3) what is the road route we take from mangalore…can anyone guide me about the places we’ll pass en route from mangalore to kukke.

    thnx again.

    abc

    December 17, 2008 at 12:12 pm

    • Hi,

      1) You can take a deviation once you cross Udupi. You can take the Karkala road, reach Dharmasthala and from there reach Kukke. You can avoid going through Mangalore City.
      2) I am not sure what you meant by distance between NH17 and Mangalore.
      3) Take the Bangalore highway from Mangalore – you will need to cross Uppinangadi, Nelyadi, Mani and get into the Shiradi Ghats. Take a right turn at Gundya junction (about 80kms from Mangalore) and travel a further 20kms to reach Kukke.

What a wonderful blog! I have been researching for quite sometime regarding one aspect of naagaaraadhane – the elaborate naaga mandala. All that the internet can tell me is that it is an expensive affair. I dont know if this is in the 1lakh range or in 10-15 lakh range. Would you perhaps know this ballpark figure? I just want to do my part in keeping the traditions of tulunadu alive. If possible, please email this information to me.

I had been to Kukke recently (15days back). Train journey is the best, it starts at 6.30 PM from Yeshwantpur, (Bangalore)….8.30 pm he reaches Blore railway station….stops at Mysore 1/2 hour….Sakleshpur 1/2 hour….reaches Kukke at 6.30 AM.

i heard roads from Sakleshpur to Gundya is very bad with lot of traffic jams (even during night)….so it is a bad idea to drive.

We had been asked to perform the sarpa samskara and other related pooja in Subramanya, so we did the same in the year 2002 and by the grace of God, we became the parents of a lovely girl child on 1.1.2005. Now she is 4 years old and we have been planning to go to subramanya with the child. We have to make it soon with the blessings of God !

  107. Nice info. Kindly let me know some travel options available. I have heard that the road from Kukke to Mangalore is bad with lot of pot holes. I am planning a trip to kukke very shortly and want to take my family along. My wife is carrying, and hence looking out for more comfortable travel options from kukke to udupi.

    Kindly suggest.

    • Namaskara Mohan,

I recently traveled by the Mysore route. You can take Bangalore – Mysore – Madikeri – Sampaje – Sullia route. From Sullia, you get a deviation for Subramanya. This last stretch may be a little bad but is still far better than Shiradi Ghats.

The information is very useful. I will be travelling this weekend to Dharmastala and Kukke and other places. However I need to know if from Shakleshpura I should take the same road to Dharmastala [Gundya Junction] or it is a different route.

Also I am planning to drive to Kateel Durga temple, Udupi, Kollur and if possible to Horanadu Annapoorneswari temple (not sure if i will be able to cover all in 2 days).

It will be helpfull if you can provide more info for me on this.

Honestly, I have not used the Sakleshpura road of late. But the Mysore – Madikeri – Sullya – Kukke road is in good condition. I suggest you take that road.

As long as you are driving during day time, it should be safe.

  123. We made a trip to Kukke Subrahmanya last weekend via Blr – Nelamangala – Kunigal – Hasan – Sakleshpura – Gundya – Subrahmanya.

Nelamangala to Kunigal — road construction slows the speed, but road condition is good

About 10-15 kms after Sakleshpura, the road condition gets really bad, until you make a left at Gundya. Note that if it’s not an SUV, the car will most likely get hit by the road below, while you are maneuvering the car over deep potholes.

There were times when I stopped, analyzed and then drove slowly in what I thought was the best part of the road! We travelled during the day. Driving at night can be really risky. With rain day/night travel can get even more risky as you just can’t gauge the depth of some of these pot holes.

At Subrahmanya, it was very hot during the day and there were hail storms in the evening (after 6:30pm).

If you are driving during the day with no rain, it’s not that bad .. except it gets really slow. I think I took almost an hour to complete the ~ 25kms of bad roads.

Excellent info from Hari and some of the comments here!
I’m planning a trip to Kukke from Bangalore starting early morning at around 6am, the route seems very clear from this blog.
The only questions I had were:
    1. About veg restaurants on the way, which ones are ideal for breakfast and lunch?
    2. Mobile signal, are there long stretches with no coverage?
Appreciate if anybody can help me with this.
    Thanks,

  127. You can find good veg food in Hassan, which is sort of mid-way. If you leave Blr by 6am, you should be in Hassan by 8 or 8:30am.

I think we got signal in most places .. except when you enter the ghats.

I would say that the route has to be through Bangalore.

Hyderabad – Bangalore – Hassan – Sakleshpura – Gundya junction – Kukke is one possible route.

Hyderabad – Bangalore – Mysore – Madikeri – Sullia – Kukke is another route.

    • Namaskara Soumita,

If you are not planning any special Sevas there, the expenses (apart from travel, food and accomodation) would be negligible. BTW, food is available for free at the temple. Accomodation at the guest houses also charge very nominal rates.

How long you need to stay at the place depends upon what ceremonies you are planning to get done. If Sarpa Samskara is being done, you may need to stay there for up to 3 days.

When was Kollur and was clarifying on the route with a couple of Cab Driver, they said if I had a SUV i can attempt even then it i horrible, when i said i had Honda City he smiled and said I shall have to leave my car there and travel back by some other mode of transport to Bangalore. It is a Horrible stretch.

    • If you mean 4th monda of January.. i dont think thats possible.. as you have to write a letter to the temple telling them that you want to perform the pooja, after which they will write back to you with the details regarding the date and how much you have to pay for the pooja etc. Sometimes there is a three-month long wait… I wrote to them in December and got a date only for April.. last year.

    • Hi,

It is done in the temple and only by temple priests. Outside priests are not allowed.
      read this: http://www.kukke.org/guidelines.html

Believe me if you are going to any person other than temple Office/Authorities, you will get cheated. Don’t ever think of that.

  156. Hi,

I’m planning to visit Kukke Subramanya temple in second / third week of Nov. 2011 but I’ve read that the Sarpa Samskara puja is not done on Ekadasis, other festival days and during the annual festival. Does the Karthika Bahula amavasya (and the related festivities) fall in second / third week of Nov. by any chance?
Also, are there any particular auspicious days in Nov. to get the puja done (Shashti after Amavasya or any other such special days)?

I would be very grateful if somebody can respond at the earliest so that I can make the arrangements accordingly.

    Kind Regards,

    Shruthi

  159. The road through Shiradi ghats and through Charmadi ghats are both horrible. And I can’t see them being repaired any time soon. Traveling on one’s own vehicle could be a nightmare – i agree with this. its still in the same condition and no one is bothered ( government ) on 16/12/2011 we were coming back from mangalore. we saw two people fell from bike and girl had deep head injury , bleeding and unconscious and there is no helpline. we cant call ambulance because there is no network of any mobile services. at least they should keep some one stand by ambulance some where in between the ghat section.

  161. Hi Hari,

This is Chandrashekar. I am from Andhra Pradesh. We’ll reach Kukke Subrahmanya on Aug12th (Sunday) early morning @ 5 30. We are around 12 people including some elders around 70 yrs. We are planning just for a darshan in Kukke temple and start to Dharmasthala by afternoon around 1 PM on the same day.

Just wanted to know about the rush on sunday and accomodation facility for half a day. Will there be any special darshan tickets for a sooner darshan.

    Thanks & Regards
