There are 9 basic principles of Tattvavada. These were beautifully elucidated by Sri Vyasaraja in a shloka which is well known as the “Prameya Shloka”. The principles are as below.
- Hari or Lord Vishnu is supreme
- The world is real
- The differences are real
- The various classes of souls are cohorts of Hari
- They reach different states ultimately
- Mukti is the experience of one’s own nature
- Mukti is achieved by pure devotion
- Observation, etc are the sources of knowledge
- It is Hari alone who is praised in the Vedas
Sri Madhva was very radical in terms of the tenets of his philosophy, especially relative to the theories present during his time. Principle 2 about the world being real was in direct contrast to the Maya that other philosophies thought of the world as. Principle 3 is actually a gist of the principle called as Pancha Bheda or the five differences between the Ishvara (Supreme Being), Jada (insentient beings) and Jiva (sentient beings). For the first time, an Indian philosopher declared that not all souls attain Moksha or liberation. Some inferior (or evil) souls are condemned to eternal damnation. Principle 5 captures this theory.

ya Madhwa was really a great realistic philosopher the world has ever seen but one unfortunate thing is that most of people are not aware his contribution to the world of philosophy. One has to read him without any kind prejudice then they will know the truth.thanks good publication
Namaskara,
I beg to diifer that this shloka was made by Vyastirtha.
1) Hari only is supreme-this was already said by ramanuja
2) World is real-Already said by Ramanuja
and so on except the 6th point where it is said that mukti is the experience of own’s true nature everything else was said by Ramanuja. This shloka was made by a Bengali not by Vyasatirtha. Because there are many other useful contributions by Acharya Madhwa like
1) Jiva has gender, so even in mukti there is male and female
2) Every word in every language and every sound in nature is an epithet of God.
3) Varnas (letters) are Anadi-nitya. The letters always existed only when we speak we give a audible form to it.
4) Atom has sub-particles
5) Plants have life and they respond to your feelings. They have the capacity to listen to music and grow.
Namaskara Vinay,
Are you contesting the fact that the “Prameya Shloka” was composed by Sri Vyasatirtha?
Regards, Hari
Dear Hari Prasad,
I have heard Sri Bannanje Govindacharya, explicitly stating that the prameya shloka is not from Sri Sri Vyasarayaru and its from a bengali vaishnava scholar, in a discourse. It was quite convincing to me also, because as stated out of all the prameyas only taratamya and mukthi being naijasukha are different from Sri Ramanuja’s VA.
Dear Vinay,
I am looking for a sruti pramana to the following prameya.
“Jiva has gender, so even in mukti there is male and female”,
do you know of any sruti text saying this?
Regards,
Arun.
Namaskara Arun,
Do you know in which pravachana did he mention this? Will be interesting to listen.
I recall reading Sri BNK Sharma’s “History of the Dvaita School….” where he acknowledges this shloka to Sri Vyasarayaru. Many of the principles that Sri Madhvacharya propagated were indeed the tenets of earlier “Realistic” schools as well. So that cannot be a basis for not attributing it to Sri Vyasarayaru.
Regards, Hari
The pravachana in question can be found here… http://www.kannadaaudio.com/Songs/Discourses/home/Acharya-Madhwa.php
check out Part 1 or Part 2. If memory serves me right, it should be part 1.
