Sarpa Sukta is actually part of the Yajur Veda. You can find it in the Taittariya Samhita 4.2.8. But the easier way is to dowload

Thanks for your response. As far as I know, Sarpa Sukta is in both Rig Veda and Yajur Veda. Perhaps, the Sukta from Krishna Yajur Veda that starts with Namo Astu Sarpebhyo is more popular. Raaga.com has an audio of Sarpa Sukta and the mantrocharana is of Rig Veda style. You can listen to that on http://www.raaga.com/channels/sanskrit/moviedetail.asp?mid=S0000144
I have been searching for the Devanagari (or Kannada) text of this Sukta and have not been able to find it so far. Perhaps, if you listen to it, you might be able to help me. Thanks, Jagadish

Hi Hari, I have another question. Could you please let me know what are considered Pancha Suktas according to Madhwa Sampradaya? Are they
Purusha Sukta, Sri Sukta, Manyu Sukta, Ambhrini Sukta, Balitta Sukta.
I read somewhere that SaptanAgni sukta is also considered part of Pancha Suktas. Is this same as Agni Sukta? If not, could you please let me know where I can find this Sukta?

Hi Jagadish,
Sri Bannanje Govindacharya, in his book Pancha Suktagalu has talked about SaptanAgni Sukta. You can find more information about the book from http://anandamala.org/ and you can find the text also in the same book (I guess – I do not have a copy of the book though)
Since Sri Bannanje has brought out a separate book on Purusha Sukta and Sri Sukta, I guess this book which deals with 5 other suktas was named in that way. But, as far as I understand, the 5 suktas that you mention consitute Pancha Suktas for Madhvas.
In fact, the book “RigvedIya Ahnika Manjari” brought out by the Sri Manmadhva Siddhantha Granthalaya of Udupi has the 5 suktas you mention.

Vishnu sahasranama is an excerpt from Mahabharata.When yudhistira asked Bheesahma as to whom one needs to pray,then bheeshma replied that it is none other than Vishnu and then gave upadesham of Vishnu sahasranama
it is not authored/composed by any one.

Hello Sridhar,
The Vishnu Sahasranama has a pre-Mahabharata context as well (I forget the exact situation though) but the common context that we all know is that it was recited by Bhishma to Yudhishthira as he was lying on his bed of arrows at the end of the war.
In fact, Sri Krishna was sitting besides Bhishma listening to the whole conversation between Yudhishthira and Bhishma.
Sri Sankaracharya has written a commentary on the same where he explains the meanings of the 1000 names but I am not sure if Sri Ramanuja has done the same.

Shankaracharya has not commented on VSN. It was a later day reproduction attributed to a different Shankara, albeit belonging to advaita fold.

I think you have done a wonderful job of making available all these “mantras” and “shlokas” to the rest of the world. May Guru Raghavendra shower his blessings on you.
For people like me (who hail from Karnataka) but cannot read/ write Kannada, and who are also not learned in Sanskrit, it is very difficult to read the stotras and also comprehend their meaning. Is there some place where all these mantras / stotras are written in english script and also their meaning explained. I would appreciate if you could guide me. Please let me know if the Raghavendra Stotram is available in english script.

The main problem with self-learning, especially in English script, is the pronunciation. It is a significant challenge to transmit the pronunciation, tone and indentations and even more difficult while reading.

Is the Durgaa Suukta that you have given according to “rig” vEda swara-s or “yajur-vEda” swara-s? Which is it to be recited according to?
I’m used to reciting suukta-s in both ways. I’m rig vEdi, but here at the temples, they use mostly yajur-vEda swara-s….

Hari avare: Namaskara, Couple of additional questions.
1. How many times should we do Pradakshina to a Diety or to the Brindavan. Should it always be an odd number such as 3,5,9 etc., and what are the permissible numbers
2. To follow the Taratamya of our sacred Acharya should we always recite the prayers in Aarohana order or Avarohana order or does it not matter.
Finally, I was told that if we have Saaligrama in the house, we should be extremely strict in our Achara/Paddhathi etc and if we think that we may not be able to keep up the level of ‘madi’ required, it is better not to procure the Saaligraama. Is this true. Also a related question, is it OK to do Sandhyavandana by reading from the book – one school of thought seems to say that if one can not pronounce/enunciate the words/phrases properly, one is better off in not doing Sandhyavandana.
Pardon me for these basic quesstions and your inputs will be much appreciated.

1. There are multiple theories I have heard on this. But, what I could gather, multiples of 4 is shreshta for Vishnu idols, 3 or odd numbers for Durga, Shiva etc while for Ganapathi – any number from 1 to 21.
2. The answer to this is purely my personal opinion – I am not sure what Srimadacharya says about this. Since, in true Madhva custom, every single prayer is offered as “antargata” to Maha Vishnu, the order should not matter. Every prayer is offered at his feet.
3. The issue of Saligrama at home is very interesting. I was recently discussing this in detail with Sri Krishna Raj Bhat, a Madhva scholar and astrologer from Bappanadu, Mulki. He was mentioning that this is the biggest misconception that is causing people to desist from Saligrama Puje. There are many Soumya Saligramas which requires basic “madi” (which in turn only means cleanliness) and nothing more. Some of the bigger idols and Saligramas need more procedure and hence are suitable in mathas and temples.
One person whom I knew had Saligramas at home but was not performing puje because of this belief. I think its a far greater sin to be not worshipping a saligrama than worshipping it with supposedly lesser levels of madi.
A simple Saligrama puje would require (a) clean mind 🙂 (icche, bhakti) (b) clean body (bathing – which all should do everyday anyways) (c) saligrama (d) clean water and (e) purusha sukta (or even just vishnu nama).
Sri Bannanje Govindacharya, in one of his works, has given instructions on how entire puje can be done with just Purusha Sukta.
In fact, one of my aims is to come out with a small handbook (sanctioned by some scholar, of course) on how to do puje and japa in really short time and basic krama/madi – for today’s IT generation.
Same applies to sandhyavandana – any japa is better than no japa. But if desire to do japa is there, it is just a matter of time before right pronunciation comes. Else, even basic chanting of “Om Namo Narayanaya” or “Om Vishnave Namah” itself will constitute japa. Some sadhane is most definitely better than no sadhane.

1. Some one told me that Maddhvas should not read/chant popular stotras such as Shri Venkatesha Suprabhatham or Hanuman Chaalisa because the composers of these who are non-Maadhvas do not follow Taratamya. Is this right?
2. The popular shloka “Shuklam Baradharam…” – does this refer to Shri Maha Vishnu or to Shri Ganesha or to both?
3. What is the relationship between Shri Mahalakshmi and Shri Parvati Devi? For example, Ambhrani sukta refers to whom?

1.Every one can read Shri Hanuman Chalisa and Shri Venkatesha Suprabatham,
You are just showing your love by doing prayer to God. Dwaita, Advita, VishistaDvaitha these all came later in fact it was given some name who follow that procedure. For example To make you understand simply to solve a problem you have 3 formulas some may find 1st way is easier than 2nd and 3rd some may choose 2nd etc.., In the same way every body’s ultimate goal is to get near to Paramatma with the blessings of Acharya. Some choose Dwaita some choose visistaadwata and adwita. But vedas are from the begging of the Srusthi. We don’t know who wrote vedas either Madhwa or any other. When we are reading them I don’t think it is wrong reading Shri hanuman chalisa and Suprabhatam.

1. I think that is a valid suggestion. Not just the Taratamya, the shlokas may violate many of the Tattvavada principles. For eg. some people consider Hanuman as an avatar of Rudra. If we chant shlokas that reflect the misconception, our beliefs and our prayers will not be in sync (I am not sure what Hanuman Chalisa says – have never read that).
2. IMHO, Sri Maha Vishnu. The Shloka says “Vishnu” and as far as I know, Vishnu can be called by any name (for e.g. Rudra, Vishvaksena, Vayu etc as in Vishnusahasranama) but no other devata can be called as Vishnu (all pervading).
3. Mother and daughter. Ambhrani Sukta refers to Maha Lakshmi only. Parvati cannot (and will never) say she lords over Rudra.

As Shri Raghu has raised few points 1.pradakshina 2 arohana avarohana krama of prayers 3. Saligrama pooje.
1. 4 Pradakshina for achieving four purusharthas
2. Arohana is samhara krama for sanyasi
3.avarohana is srishti krama for others.
arohana form of praying from least significant uptill Vishnu, is also laya sadhana suitable at the time of sleep or death….. vijayadasaru
3.saligrama : suchi asuchi madi is all for the human body and not for the Lord , who is ever present in the Saligrama .Touching Saligrama purifies human body , Chandrahasa used to keep saligrama in his mouth .even then lord blessed him.
but what we offer to Lord he returns infinitely back,
Kali offers unclean things ,with unclean mind and intention ,he gets total darkness andhatamas.

One of the shlokas is:
“Pashyema sharada shatam; jeevema sharada shatam; nandama sharada shatam-modama sharada shatam; bhavama sharada shatam…”
My grand-father used to recite this in the middle of chanting a whole lot of other veda mantras. So I am hoping that the “savita …” mantra will also be found in the
same set. That mantra is for the Sun to protect
us.

Two questions:
1. When you get a chance can you post some detailed info about Sandhyavandana. I would like to know the meaning of each of the steps that we do like Pranayama, Arghyam, Sooryopasthanam etc.
2. I have seen people do sasthanganamaskara parallel to the dieties in sannidhana. In other words, most of us do namaskara vertically (perpendicular to the dieties) but some people especially in Chennai, seem to prefer doing it in parallel to the sannidhana. any idea why and what is the correct way to do?

1. Sure, I will try to do this. I have some books by Sri Bannanje and Sri Prabhanjanacharyaru and I should be able to compile something out of those.
2. I have read numerous opinions about this and, honestly, am not sure what is the “right” way. I think of this in the light of connecting with God. I have tried doing it perpendicular to the dieties (orthogonal to the idols – for e.g facing north if idol faces east) and somehow am very uncomfortable. I therefore do it facing the idols and to the right of it.

One more question. What is the significance of wearing janivaara and what is its relationship to performing Sandhyavandana? While doing Sandhyavandana there does not seem to be any process (at least in the Yajur Veda paddhathi) that references janivaara. Is there any ritual where we do something with the sacred thread at all? (other than the one where ‘praacheenavithi’ is uttered and the thread is made ‘apasavya’ during the rites to our departed elders)

Some people insist the Janivaara must be held while doing Gayathri Japa while many others reject that. I do not know of any process involving the Janivaara.
One very good explanation I came across was based on the name “Yagnopavita” itself. Earlier, a cloth on top was very necessary while doing Homa and Yagnas. Since people in earlier days used to do Homas a lot of times, the Upa-Veeta (secondary garment) became almost a permanent addition and hence the concept of “Yagna Upa Veeta” came in. Since the Upanayana ceremony initiates one into Japa, Puje, Homa etc, it is also the right time for one to put on the Yagnopavita.

yagyopaveetha is a symbol of samskara that ordains one to carry out his duty as per ashrama and varna one belongs to. The upaveeta has presence of many dieties. The karma carried out by the dwija bears fruit as per the tejas he has amassed ,this tejas is always present in the granthi.
for devatas yagyopaveetha should be in savya, for karmas pertaining to rishis ,it should be malakar,for pitrus it should be apsavya.the more pavitra the upaveetha , more concrete the karmaphala, hence it is kept on ears during malamootravisarjana ,ie contact with proverbial ganga.
NO janivara no samskara,and hence no karma adhikara,no phala.

one set janivara for bramhachari, grahastha wears two, because his punya is shared by his wife. since women dont wear janivara , their male wears it for them. you can wear as many for as many people. thirdly one extra is worn as uttariya vastra for yagnya.

janivara was also used to differentiate castes in olden days , gold for bramhins,silver for kshatriyas,copper for vaishyas and intermediaries for anulomas, seesa or jute for pratilomas.

I also like the “Kausalya Supraja Raama…” the beginning stothra in Shri Venkateswara Suprabhatham. I have not been reading this due to confusion about Taaratamya. Is it OK to chant Aaditya Hridayam (per our Taaratamya). Please let me know.

The first shloka you mention is more of a statement than a prayer where Lord Rudra is explaining the power of Rama mantra to Parvati. Simply chanting ‘Rama’ three times is also very powerful. Hence, the real mantra hidden there is just the name ‘Rama’. But many thanks for bringing up both the shlokas.
I had the great opportunity to discuss the question of Aditya Hridayam with Sri Vyasanakere Prabhanjanacharya a few months ago. He opined that as long as we did the Anusandhana that the Aditya Hridayam was bestowed by Sri Rama for the welfare of humanity and Surya himself, it is perfectly ok. Never should we think that Sri Rama derived any benefit by praying to Surya. Essentially, we should not fall into the ‘Asura Mohana’ trap that is open there 🙂

Shri Hari avare: Thanks for providing the information on Aaditya Hridaya. It makes perfect sense.
Do you think it will be correct to say that Maadhvas should chant shlokas which originate from the Vedas or Puranas and shlokas written by Shrimadacharya and his parampare and of course by great Maadhvas such as Shri Appanacharya. That way we are assured of following Taratamya.

Yes, that would be a good thing to do. I once asked Sri Prabhanjanacharya what he thought of the Durga Saptashathi, especially because in my parts of the world (Udupi side), it is thought of as a Lakshmi shloka set. His response was that since it was not ‘sanctioned’ by any of our Acharyas, it is better avoided, especially given that there are so many others written/sanctioned by them.

(1) I remember seeing a 2-volume Kannada translation of Valmiki Ramayana at Vedanta Book House. I do not remember the editor off hand. It was very good. Comes in a case and hard bound. Also, if you obtain the first volume of Mahabharata Tatparya Nirnaya, edited by Sri Vyasanakere Prabhanjanacharya, the chapters on Ramayana in that would provide you some amazing insights. I also heard that the Sangraha Ramayana by Sri Narayana Panditacharya was released in Vidya Peeta a couple of weeks ago. That could be a good buy as well.
(2) Although a westerner’s translation, this one should be good for online reading…

I am not sure what you mean by “buying Vayu Stuti”. If you are referring to Mukhya Prana Chakra, I suggest you contact a good archaka or purohit and get their opinion. I am not well versed with Chakras and Mandalas and hence my opinions may be wrong. If you are referring to purchasing Vayu Stuti book and reciting it, then its definitely a very good idea, provided you get ‘Upadesa’ from a Guru.

Ya i was referring to the mukhya prana chakra and Vayu stuti yuktam ,not the book.I saw it in the hanuman temple which has a photo of Hanuman and rama written all over it and a chakra next to it.

Kindly allow me to put forward the meaning of Tartamya.
Tartamya in plain english can be translated as Heirarchy .
Tatavavada protrays five fold differences of which
1 Difference between Paramatma and Jeeva
2.Difference among Jeeva
the second point refers to the uniqueness of the jeevas [individuality] with respect to their qualilities.
Thus apart from these uniqueness , these are placed in aheirarchy [into gradation] on account of increase in the number of qualities they possess and also on account of dependency they exhibit even in Moksha on their superiors apart from dependence on God.
Thus in this heirarchy Lord VAYU /Bramha takes the supreme spot amongst jeevas [jeevas yet to attain Moksha] and list goes on
1 Devatas
2.Rishis
3Manushyas
till trina[ twig] etc.
each has limitation in understanding GOD and also in the quanta of happiness /qualities.
Also in samsara the amount of sufferings these suffer are also in descending order.
Thus Vayu is most knowledged .flawless and unswervingly devoted and rest are lesser in the order , with twig being least knowledged and with ordinary happiness.
All souls [reflections of GOD] are dependent on God Vishnu , its only he residing in them [different from them] exhibits these limitations as per their swarupa.

Namaskara Shri Hariprasad: I have two questions. Both solicit your opinions.
First one is: what are the daily mantras/stotras you recite and how much does it take. I am just trying to get a list of mantras I should chant (of course all should be per our Maadhva siddhantha) as a recommended daily chanting.
((Is it appropriate to start the prayer session with Sandhyavandana or should Sandhyavandana be the last part of the prayer session?))
My second question (I have asked other learned persons this question; so apologies if you saw this in a different website!)
In your opinion, what is the most important advice given by our Jagad Guru Shri Madhvacharya. For example, if some one were to ask me that question, I would say that the most important thing I learnt from our Acharya’s writings is: “Preenayamo Vasudevam”. I believe that all our actions should be directed to pleasing the Supreme Lord Shri Hari.
I am interested in knowing your thoughts on this subject.

Gayathri, Ashtakshari and Panchakshari – as part of the Sandhyavandana (which I do at the beginning), Puje, Vishnu Sahasra Nama, Vayu Stuti and Sri Srishagunadarpana Stotra are what I do daily. In addition, some Mula mantras for which I have received Upadesha – as part of Sandhyavandana. It takes about 45 mins in the morning and 30 mins in the evening.
In my opinion, Bhakti towards Lord Vishnu is the single biggest message of Sri Madhvacharya. Even for the ultimate goal of Moksha, no amount of effort can guarantee it, except for the grace of Vishnu – closer to which Bhakti alone can take us.

What are the Ashtakshari and Panchakshari mantras – can they be found in the standard Sandhyavandana books (Yajur Veda, preferably) or are they something different and if so any pointers to web sites that contain these stotras will be much appreciated.
Can you provide any links to Shrishagunadarpana stotra which give the stotra as well as the significance behind it, composer and such details.
Can you also suggest one or two stotras (other than Vayu Stuthi) on Pranadevuru/Hanuman (I have read Shri Vyasaraja teertha’s composition – Yantroddharaka Hanumantha Stotra).

In one of the previous comments in this thread, Sri Chiraan had clarified that avarohana krama is prescribed for non-sanyasis. Hence, starting from Vishnu stotras, you can proceed in the order of Lakshmi, Hanuman and so on.
BTW, the list you have made is really huge. Do you chant all of these daily?

In the book form of the audio discourse given by Sri Sri Vishva Priya Theertha Swamiji of Adamaru Matha on the Vishnu Sahasranama, there is a detailed and conclusive article on the topic of chanting of Vishnu Sahasranama by women. That article collates the views of several Dvaita scholars, including that of Sri Sri Vidyamanya Theertha Swamiji and conclusively declares that women *CAN* chant the stotra.
In the discourse though, Sri Sri Vishva Priya Swamiji has made it clear that anyone who has not had the Upanayana Samskara should not chant “Om” during the stotra recitation. Such persons, which includes women, should use “Sri” instead of “Om”.
That should answer it from a Shastra point of view. Personally also, I believe that women should definitely chant the stotra. It contains names of the Lord and no one can be excluded from calling out the Lord!

As regards the Vedas, I have a slightly longer explanation. Hope I make some sense.
During the Vedic times, strict adherence to rituals and discipline was very important. Only people who had their Upanayana samskara were allowed to chant the Vedas. This, according to me, was because once the Upanayana was done, the person maintained a high level of purity, cleanliness and adherence to Shastras, rituals, etc. For e.g. once Upanayana is done, one is expected to clean himself every day early in the morning and only then start the Japa/Puje and chanting of Vedas.
According to the Shastras, any secretion from the human body makes one unclean. This is also a practical/scientific observation. Given that men can secrete almost any day, there is a strict requirement on their part to clean themselves every single time before starting rituals. During the rituals/chanting, it is strictly forbidden to get “unclean”. Control over senses and concentration on the spiritual aspects alone helps achieve this.
For women, nature has enforced some things which make it impossible for them to control such secretions during few days every month (during their periods). Even if Upanayanam is done to women (hypothetically), they would not be able to practice the necessary rituals for at least few days a month. Now the Shastras do not allow a person who has undergone Upanayana to “give up” the practices even for a day! He loses the Brahmacharya if he does so.
That being the case, the purpose of Upanayana would not be served if women underwent them. As an outcome of Upanayana not being done, they are not allowed to chant the Vedas.
Note that our Shastras only prevent them from chanting Vedas, undergoing Upanayana and performing few other rituals. Our Shastras are absolutely not against them going in the path of spirituality.
Men are prevented from chanting the Vedas without first undergoing physical cleanliness. The restriction on women, IMO, is just a natural extension of this rule. I do not think they were/are targeted specifically.
Similarly, even if a Brahmin child does not undergo the Upanayana Samskara, or does not strictly practice the rituals after Upanayana, our Shastras forbade such people from chanting the Vedas.
Note that the above comment is an analysis of mine. I probably would not be able to point to exact resources which declare these things. I firmly believe our ancient Rishis made “rules” with the most sincerest of intentions. My analysis is just to try to find out what could have led them to put such a restriction in place.

Sachi onwards woman are all eligible for vedas . not others . interesting rutukala is only for those woman governed by sachi and Indra as a relief for INdra from bramhahatya of Vritrasur and not for others , all woman who are not giverned by INDRA and SACHI are eligible for vedas.

There is a Sriyooganarasimha swamy temple in a remove village, This temple belongs to Hysola period notified by the acrological department. There was no pooja from past many years. With the help of other devotiees we have now restarted the pooja activities from 2005 onwards. the Government of Karnataka is very silent. since there is no income. Could you kindly advice me what to do and how to go about.
