If I knew when I would die

with 2 comments

I am wondering since a few days on how one would (or should) feel when one is told of one’s remaining time on this planet.

  • Let’s say your most trusted doctor made a prognosis/diagnosis and declared that you would only live X more number of years.
  • Let’s say your astrologer told you your death would happen so many years/months/days from now.
  • Or one’s sixth sense declared a retirement age.

If one’s countdown clock is set, does he try to refute the system that he so strongly believed? Does he accept it as just fate? Does it set him on a mission?

It surely must bring out the character in the man. Does he curse his birth? Does he realize his shortcomings/incapabilities? Does he expect society to empathize/sympathize with him? Is the rest of his life a challenge for him?

Comments welcome!

Slapped actress!!

leave a comment »

In South India, we have the crazy habit of giving tags to famous movie stars! For example, in the Kannada film industry, we have “Crazy Star”, “Hatrick Hero”, “Golden Hero”, “Tragic Hero”, “Rural Hero” and so on….

But the latest title I heard is “Slapped actress”. Apparently, a director slapped an actress for not showing the right expressions. I hope that title brings her good luck. Maybe she should cash in on this and introduce a “getting-slapped” scene in every movie of hers. And try a variety of ways in getting slapped. That would surely get the crowd to watch her movies. And then others will get inspired to get slapped in movies. And then they will institute a “Best Slap of the Year” award. And then they will build a temple for her … called “Slappamma Temple”….and then….ok I know….I will stop…sometimes it pays to get slapped :-)

BTW, in Youtube, type Balayya and watch real high quality action scenes from Telugu movies. Quite unbelievable and can easily put Jackie Chan, Bruce Lee, James Bond and others to shame.

The art of publicity

with 3 comments

The chief minister of Karnataka, after protests by the Indian hockey coach and players, has announced an award of 2 lakhs for each of the hockey players from Karnataka. The protests started after he announced a reward for the cricketers from Karnataka after India won the T20 finals. The hockey players were unhappy that they did not get similar treatment though they had recently won the Asia cup hockey.

Now, the cash awards are meaningless to the cricketers as they earn crores every match. The award is only interesting to the politicians as they get to conduct a “ceremony” to hand over the money, which means media coverage and publicity. So, it is natural that they are interested in awarding cricketers and not hockey players or any other sportsperson. How much media coverage would an awards ceremony for hockey players of Karnataka get?

Pankaj Advani recently won the world championships in Billiards. And its not the first time he has done it. There’s no incentive for the government to shower him with any rewards. Of course, he will get his share of “titles” such as the Padma* and the Ratna*. But it doesn’t make any sense to reward him for a World title, does it? Come on…who’ll notice it anyway?

GOD sued!

leave a comment »

One of the big “news” items over here nowadays is the lawsuit an Omaha legislator filed against “GOD”. He says he wants to make a point that a lot of frivolous lawsuits are being filed in the US. The lawsuit blames GOD for the suffering and pain that humans undergo, all the natural disasters, etc, etc.

But, hey! GOD decided to respond. GOD says he is immune from earthly laws and that he is beyond jurisdiction. And since he has given us all free will, he can’t be blamed for all the suffering and oppression. Great point!

GOD’s sure got a fine sense of philosophy :-) And seems like he’s studied law at some point too!

My machine’s RAM is as big as the disk (was)!

with one comment

Yesterday, I upgraded my office machine’s RAM to 2GB. I still remember my first machine at IBM in 1999 which had 32MB RAM and a 2GB hard disk. I got to install and run OS/2 on it. Soon, I got a RAM upgrade to 64MB and everyone was envying me! Its amazing to see the progress hardware has made over the past several years. I am just wondering if we will be using machines with 40 or 60GB RAM in a few years from now. I certainly won’t be placing my money on that not happening.

Google is the new home

- The latest recruit by Google from the open source world is Robert Love. Andrew Morton, of course, works there already. I am sure in a few years, the lkml world will be run by the Google folks, just like it is currently by IBM.

Whats wrong with me?

with 4 comments

I have had a couple of queries about my previous post. I gave it a second reading myself and could not make too much sense of it. That got me thinking as to why I posted such a blog.

It could not be that I have too much spare time at hand. I recently read a beautiful quote which said “Leisure is the mother of philosophy”. This I thought was a nice way of saying “An idle mind is a …..” But my post contains no philosophy. And I have moved to a new job now. A job which is getting hectic by the day and also more enjoyable (happy that I got back to my kernel engineering days again). So, its not that I have a lot of time to kill.

I think the simple reason is that my life sucks and is a pile of junk now. The post just reflects that state :-) Its the truth. Life sucks.  And I dont even need to pull my hair over this fact – I am balding anyways :-) Guys, if any of you throw a party one of these days, I think I will need to come with some sort of an ID. The rate is incredible now!!

Overview on corruption

leave a comment »

I found an article today on the nature and extent of corruption in Karnataka :-) The webpage gives details of the situation prevalent in various departments of the Karnataka government and even has a chart listing the “standard fees” for various jobs to be done. The chart is called the “Bribe Rate Card”. Check out http://www.karnataka.com/govt/corruption/
