Ok, here is a small introduction to myself. I am Hariprasad Nellitheertha. I should have been Hariprasad Bhat
but my dad decided my surname was too “Brahminised” and hence dropped it.
I am based in Bangalore and work in the technology industry. My work area revolves around OS kernels, file systems and virtualization. But, I write almost nothing about technology in my blog. There are just too many better qualified people to be doing that.
I am originally from Nellitheertha, a place near Mangalore. You will therefore find a strong influence of Dakshina Kannada (thats what my region is called in Karnataka) in my writing.
I am also a strong believer in Tattvavada or Dvaita Philosophy. So, once in a while, I write a bit about why it would be foolish not to appreciate GOD’s creation and think that the world is an illusion.
Hope you enjoy my writing. I also enjoy interacting with readers. So feel free to drop in comments.

Hay,
Infact it is quite interesting subject to discuss.i want to know more about Saligrama which is worshiped. There are so many types in my house.
Vasudha
Hello Vasudha,
Great that you have multiple Saligramas in your house. Can you provide any details on them please….
Regards, Hari
Hai jariprasad,
Certainly I will send photograhs of saligrams in our house.
Vasudha
Hi hari prasad can i have any information regarding kukke subramanya swamy temple – as such timings of dharshan- whether is open for 24 hours or not ?
I am going to visit the place this week end and need some informations to make my journey convenient
I will happy to hear from you
Dear Shri Hariprasad:
I’m also very interested in shaalagraama-s…. I love to collect them for daily puuje…..
Great blog…. I found the vEda suukta-s to be most useful and have printed them out for use during daily puuje.
Can you please clarify: We should read nArAyaNa varma, then shriisha guNa darpaNa, and then nArAyaNa varma again, correct? OR – Is it the other way around?
Looking forward to hearing back from you… I would love to call you – what is your number?
I also read pavamaana suukta – so, we have many things in common…..
I’m a dEshastha maadhwa grown up in USA…. I live in Washington DC – have been living here since I was 7 years old…..
I love India and our Hindu Heritage and Culture. I love to visit temples in India whenever I come…. I love Karnatic Music too – I sing and play the Veena. I teach both as well.
Looking forward to making your acquaintance,
With best regards, Raghavendra. 202-291-2260, 301-904-8039 cell.
Dear Shri Raghavendra,
Thanks for your encouraging comments. It would be really great to know you. I will drop you a personal mail and we can sync up.
Great to know that you collect and worship Saligramas even when in US. I think such information would (or should) be inspirational for many here.
With regard to the Shri Shriisha Guna Darpana Stotra, the method mentioned by you is correct.
My grandfather initiated me into the entire Soma Pavamana Mandala immediately after my Upanayana. It has been an immense help during my formative years and even now.
Thanks and Regards,
Hari
Dear Shri. Hariprasad:
Thanks for the reply. I shall look forward to your personal e-mail. You can e-mail me with cc to both nadasudha@gmail.com and raj_batni@yahoo.com . Thanks….
Regarding the posting of the story of lakshmi-hridaya: I had also heard of and read about the same story of ’shriisha guNa darpaNa’.
But – Is there a ‘utkiilana’ mantra or a ’shaapavimOchana mantra’ for “lakshmi hridaya”?
I do observe (with upadEsha) – the aavrutti puuje during navaraatri of ‘lakShmi hridaya’. This is where you increase the sampuTita count by one daily – with archane/puuje to shrii shriikara dEvaru…..
Is there any tradition of a ’shaapavimOchana mantra’ for ‘lakShmi hridaya’? Can you enquire amongst your Elders and let me know?
I learnt pavamaana suukta here formally under a Guru locally – Shri. Harish Baipadithaya. Thereafter, I was lucky to study/learn the ‘brihati sahasra’ from an Elderly Guru in India. I’m still practicing the same…..
You are very lucky to have had your own Grandfather initiate you into pavamaana suukta.
Looking forward to your reply,
Sincerely yours, Raghavendra (Washington DC, USA).
Dear Shri. Hariprasad:
Can you please post “rig vEdiiya” ‘gaNapati suukta’?
The pdf document that is referenced is not printing the 1st page properly. I’ve printed the rest.
Can you post the ‘gaNapati suukta’ seperately? or the same document…. I just need it on one page along with the other 2 rk-s from rig vEda on gaNapati….
thanking you for the same,
With best regards, Raghavendra.
Dear Shri. Hariprasad:
Can you post the lycrics to the tuLu song: “muuLuLLe namma kriShNa paaro balle” ?
Also – Are there any other dEvaranAma-s in tuLu? I have heard that shrii vaadiraajaru has sung in tuLu…
Thanks, With best regards, Raghavendra.
Dear sir,
there is no mention of ratnagarbha saligram in classical texts yet it finds mention in various discussions . i do have one in my house . it is transparent with reddish hue when held against light , its worship brings enormious material prosperity.
if you do find a reference for it kindly post it.
other saligram that i have is hayagreeva , narsimha , laxminarayana , laxminarsimha , ananta, vasudev , and five sudarshana and ratnagarbha .
having 12 saligramas make up a kshetra ie. akin to any holy pilgrimage place .
it burns up the sins of people living upto one yojana vicinity.
this is what classics say. ie varaha purana.
krishnarpana
Dear Sri Raghavendra,
I have the ganapati sukta with me but it is going to take at least a couple of weeks before I get to transliterate and post it.
It sure will be the first one I will do as soon as I get a chance.
Regards, Hari
Dear Sri Raghavendra,
I recently bought a book on Sri Vadiraja Swamy’s works in Kannada. Haven’t gone through it yet but will check to see if it has got any of his compositions in Tulu.
Dear Sri Prasanna,
You surely are blessed to be having 12 saligramas in your house!

Dear Sri Hariprasad,
I was lucky to find your blog while searching for mantras and I got addicted to all the valuble information in the blog. It is interesting to note the reason for celebrating 60yrs bithday as we are celebrating my father’s shastiabdi poorthi in this month at Thirukoilur.
Last week, I had taken my horoscope to an astrologer and during the analysis, he suggested to perform Sukra-aditya sandhi shanti homa. Can you pl share more details on the shanti homa and its importance.
I am also trying to find more about Shimshumara lord, whom I heard is head of NavaGrahas. I would be glad if you can pl information on these topics.
rgds
Ajeya
Dear Sri Ajeya,
Usually, “Sandhi Shantis” are performed for some of the Dasha transitions, specifically the Kuja-Rahu transition, the Rahu-Bruhaspati transition and the Shukra-Aditya transition. There is a certain window on either side of a transition known as Dasa Chidra which could be a very sensitive time depending upon the placement of the planets and their ownerships.
Based on your chart, the astrologer therefore may have suggested that your transition through this Dasa chidra may be well off by doing a Homa and gaining some blessings and protection. The Homa will essentially be an attempt to appease the concerned Grahas. The main thing is that, in Madhva tradition, the Nava Graha Homas are all done essentially to Lord Narasimha. HE controls all the Grahas and the planets themselves are just doing their duty.
Regards, Hari
Namaskara Suma avare,
Many thanks for your kind words!

Hi Hari!
Ran inti your blog as I was searching for some info on Kukke Subramanya Temple. I have one quesry and I hope or other visitors might be able to answer. I have booked for Sarpa Samskara puja end of March. I’m told that a male and a brahmin has to do the puja. Unfortunately in my case it is not possible. One of the temple admin satff told me that they can arrange for a brahmin to do the puja. My question, does it anyway dilute the impact/outcome of the puja? I would actually be quite happy if a poor brahmin does the puja and I can give some dakshina. Can anyone clarify please? Thanks
Namaskara Hema,
Well, it is always best if one does any Puja himself/herself. But since this is not possible in your case, getting it done through another person should be perfectly ok.
I would actually look for a competent brahmin who can do the Puja with as much sincerity/devotion and concentration as possible. A poor brahmin need not necessarily mean a pious brahmin. And of course, you can always donate to poor brahmins (and others) later. It is definitely a satkarma.
All the very best for your visit/Puja.
Regards, Hari
Namskara Hari,
I can definitely do that for you.In fact i am scheduled to be in pajaka in the first week of next month and i can talk to the concerned and confirm you with the details

Which is the right mantra/stotra of prana devaru and subramanya for daily pathane for ladies
Namaskara Hari
Thanks a ton for that useful suggestion. You are absolutely right. I will look for someone competent and sincere .
Regards
Hema
Thanks a Ton ! u are amazing…..ur rocking .. i guess this is info is more than enough to streamline my already confused mind… ok since iam form mumbai … and have no clue about kannada expect gotthu and saakaytu.. utta
.. i need to know some more specific details… “middle of the town”.. will really help if u gimme some more details.. coz i plan to hire a vehicle fromm coorg… i was told that ambassodor cars are easily available… ? pls suggest approx how much whould it cost for the enitre trip….
i did read both ur blogs … is subramanya temple open full day .. any specific puja that one can perform……. also at dharamsthal.. any specific timings i was told that dharmasthal temple shuts for afternoon and reopens at evenings where there is pooja with elephant procession and worth the watch,,,,can i make it and return safely… would it be very cold there …:-)
shruti
Namaskara,
- You get a deviation to Subramanya once you enter Sullia town. This is the road I am suggesting.
- I guess you will get other cars also from Coorg. I am not sure of the rates but I think they charge 6-8 rupees per km. You can count about 350kms for the entire day.
- Both temples are closed during the afternoon after lunch. Its going to be tight for you to cover both temples in a single day.
- You will not have time to perform special Pujas there. At the counter, you can pay money for some “sevas” and obtain prasadam.
- If you stay back at Dharmasthala for the evening festivities, I suggest you do NOT head back to Coorg, especially if you are traveling alone in the car. If you are a group, then you can head back after finishing evening Darshan, which starts around 7PM.
- It is not very cold in those parts of Karnataka. Basic winter clothing should suffice.
Regards, Hari
Namaskara Hari,
I need your help once agin. Now that my trip to Kukke is confirmed, I was wondering if I could make a day visit to Dharmasthala and get back to Kukke by night so that I can do the sarpa sankalpa puja at Kukke. I will be reaching Kukke on 25 early morning around 6AM by Manglaore express. Is it possible to go to Dharmasthala from there have darshan and get back by eveing to Kukke? I heard there is a Southadka Shree Mahaganapathi Kshetra somewhere along the way. Is it possible to visit this temple also? Please tell me how are the transport facilities from Kukke to Dharmasthala…bus , taxi etc and costs and frequency
Regards
Hema
Namaskara Hema,
AFAIK, there are good bus facilities between Kukke and Dharmasthala. And you can definitely make it back to Kukke by night. I do not have too many details about the other Mahaganapathi temple though.
If you start early from Kukke, coming back the same night shouldn’t be an issue at all.
Regards, Hari
Namaskara Hari,
Thank you for all the information on Kukke and Dharmasthala.. i had the most amazing trip one cud ever believe…. if u recollect i was to go to kukke & Dharmasthala from coorg , but since i got 1 free day from chikmagalur.. i decided to make the most of it….. it is around 300 kms from Chickmagalur….. First headed to Dharmasthala….. started at around 7.45 am from Planters Court , Chickmagalur , I G Road… reached around 11am
since there were holidays on the 24, 25 & 26th Jan i got a great no rush darshan on 27th ….. We did the abhishek pooja…and were out of the temple within 20 mins…after a quick stop for nariyal paani we headed to Subramanya….. Found no rush there…. we got nice darshan of the deity and headed for Adi subramanya darshana.. situated within the temple premises …
Reached back to chickmagalur around 6.pm
i must say god has been very kind to us….once again thanks for all the info
Namaskara Shruti,
Going by your narration, you have been very lucky and have had an excellent trip. Congratulations!
Regards, Hari
I am a 64-year old person still struggling to identify my KULADEVARU. I belong to ANGIRASA GOTRA. After various findings, recently I was told that Inna Mahalingeshwara & Mundkuru Durga Parameshwari are my Kuladevaru. But your blog mentions that Bhargava gotra people worship these gods. Can u enlighten me on this?KVRAO 9980145573 (mobile)
Namaskara Sri Rao,
It is true that Bhargava Gotra people worship these two gods as Kula Devaru. But I do not think it is exclusive to them. As long as your source is reliable, it should be fine.

Dear Hari,
I do not know how to express thanks to you for your works thru this wonderful weblog. Your weblog has widened my horizon on what to learn about Lord Shri Hari. Its so nice to see a fellow tulu person come with such a tremendous effort. I dont know why but I love Tulu Nadu so much (may be because I was born there in a small village called Bajagoli near Karkala) and am fascinated with anything and everything about Tulunadu and that’s why your weblog is my favorite as it covers Tulunadu in its entirety (from Aadhyathmic to our culture). I have a goal to visit all the places that our great Shri Madhvacharya has visited you have posted thanks to your blog. I am from Hyderabad and would wish to meet you when you are here. BTW, if you could throw light on the importance of observing Ekadashi as per our Acharr(if possible in full detail), that will be of great help to one and all and especially me.
Regards,
Raghavendra.
Namaskara Sri Raghavendra,
Thanks for your nice words. Surely, we can meet up sometime when we are in the same city.
I am slowly migrating Tulu Nadu and Culture/Spirituality related content to my other site http://anandatirtha.wordpress.com
Hope you will bookmark that site too and visit it often.
Your suggestion on Ekadashi writeup is very interesting. I will try to do something on that. Thanks!
Regards,
Hari
Dear Hari,
Sure I’ll bookmark your site on Tulu Nadu and Culture/Spirituality. No doubt about that. I will constrantly look for new things in your weblog. Thank you for taking my suggestion and would love to see the writeup on Ekadashi soon. I am very curious as to what Acharr has written on this topic
Regards,
Raghavendra.
Dear Shri Hari,
Where do the western world and its culture, muslims and its culture, buddhism and its culture find place in our vedas? Let me put it this way….Christianity is dominant all over the world and Islam is fast catching up. Why not ours? What category do they come under as per our ancient records? Is there any mention about them? How has this part of the world come into existence? If you think answer to these questions has the potential to hurt religious sentiments, please send your answer to my personal email address.
With due respect,
Raghavendra
The smrits call them mleccha, yavana and vraatya, if not the vedas who call them as Dasyava: But now they are more in number than Hindus by conversion, forcible most of the time, Reconversion was almost a failure since other religions have less regulations. Their caste system is different.Protestants, and Catholics differ. Shiyas ans sunnies differ. But when it comes to their religion they are one. This is why Hinduism is a minority Religion when comare with the other three.
Dear Hari,
Could you please throw some light on the question mentioned above? I am just curious. Hope I am not annoying you. Also I request you for a write up on observing Ekadashi Vrata. Thanks for the information on Arjuna killing Yudhishtira. A very valuable lesson to be drawn and apply it in our daily lives. I sincerely appreciate your work commitment towards this blog despite a demanding schedule.
With Best Regards,
Raghavendra
Namaskara Sri Raghavendra,
Since my schedule nowadays is a little tight, I am not able to respond to comments efficiently. Kindly excuse me.
I am not sure if you are pointing to the question on Saligramas or the one on Ekadashi. I am not sure if someone makes available Saligramas for purchase. I mean, there will be people who do this, but I am not aware of their address. One place to try would be Pooja Prapancha in Gandhi Bazaar. It is on the Netkallappa circle road, very close to the DVG Road junction. Even if they don’t have it, they may be able to point out some contacts.
I personally believe that people should donate Saligramas. Saligramas received in this fashion and subsequently worshiped sincerely can have tremendous positive benefits. Requesting some senior Brahmins or a temple/mutt could be a good idea.
Due to a slightly tight schedule, I have not made any progress on the writeup on Ekadashi. But I have gathered a few resources. I hope to post an article at the earliest.
Thanks for your positive comments.
Regards, Hari
Dear Hari,
I am pointing to my question dated April 23rd, 2009 at 11:04 pm on western world in our Vedas.
With Best Regards,
Raghavendra
Dear Hari..
I am following your website from last 4 months, I am pretty nastik… but your website has changed to rethink about what all i thought.. you are doing a good job.. I can feel the essence of brahmin and proudness of madhwa, one thing is bothering me… My rashi is dhanu and my nakshatra is poorvashada and my gotra is vishwamitra.. as you know bit of astrology… please tell me how is my time in comming days, from last days i am feeling not so good in my personal life,, hope you reply to this.
Namaskara Nagendra,
Makes me feel really good to know that my blog helped in your rethinking. My aim is to prevent the pride of being Madhva from turning into Aham.
Regarding the astrological query, while you can give me your date of birth, time of birth and place and I can respond to you, a faster and more accurate response can be had by posing the query to Sri Chiraan at http://chiraan.wordpress.com/free-astro-consultation/

Dear Shri Hari,
I once again repeat my previous question with a small addition. Hope I am not bothering you.
Where do the western world and its culture, muslims and its culture, buddhism and its culture find place in our vedas? Let me put it this way….During Satya, Treta, Dwapara yugas where were the present North America, Europe, Israel, Middle east, Australia? Christianity is dominant all over the world and Islam is fast catching up. Why not ours? What category do they come under as per our ancient records? Is there any mention about them? How has this part of the world come into existence? If you think answer to these questions has the potential to hurt religious sentiments, please send your answer to my personal email address.
With due respect,
Raghavendra
Namaskara Sri Raghavendra,
While I don’t know the complete breadth of the Vedas, I don’t think they mention a lot of places. The following link may be of some use to you.
http://www.tri-murti.com/ancientindia/rigHistory/ch4.htm
There are obviously no references to Christianity and Islam in our Vedas because it predates them. Our Puranas do have a lot of description of the various Dweepas and Khandas. I am sure if a proper mapping is done, the various countries of today can be mapped to these names.
In the Mahabharata though, there are numerous references to Kingdoms in China, Russia, etc. Mahabharata also talks about some tribes and calls them Mlecchas. Note that these are not pointing towards Christianity or Islam, just towards the Western Asian geography.
Our Vedas, Puranas and Itihasas do recognize the existence of these lands. We should not think that our scriptures deemed Bharata as the entire Universe. But, Bharata Khanda is rightly called as the Punya Bhumi. Even today, India is perhaps the most spiritual part of the world!
As for your question regarding the spread of other religions, Sanatana Dharma does not believe in “enforcement”. Strength in numbers does not indicate strength in the philosophy.
Hope some of your queries were answered at least.
Regards, Hari
Dear Shri Hari,
Thanks a lot for your reply. Fitting answer as far as the spread of the religion is concerned. However i am still intrigued how were these khandas then. Yes i agree with you that India is the most spiritual. Still awaiting your write up on Ekadashi. I really appreciate you for your patience.
With Best Regards,
Raghavendra
A test mail now. Have a lot of queries / doubts on the spiritual matter and shall post them from time to time. It appears that with the great efforts / contributions of Shri Hari, most of them should get clarified and I become enlightened. Congratulations Shri Hari, it’s a great seva u are doing for the welfare of the jeevas.
Regards,
Srinivas N.
Namaskara Srinivas,
I suggest that you post your queries on spirituality at my new site http://anandatirtha.wordpress.com/
Regards, Hari
Dear Shri Hari,
Thnx for ur reply.
I understand that Kritha, Tretha, Dwapara and Kaliyuga make up a Maha Yuga. Each of the Yuga runs for several lakhs of years. My question is :
1. How many such Maha Yugas have so far got completed?
2. Does the various avataara of Lord Paramatma repeats in each yuga? If so, why?
3. Do the jeeva also repeat their existence in every maha yuga? If the answer is yes, how at all is possible for any jeeva to ultimately reach moksha?
4. First time a yuga could begin, what existed? When was the living jeevas created ? Who was the first man/woman coming to existence? Initially, how many were created?
5. Why did Lord Paramaatma create a male and a female gender? Why only two? Any specific reasons to restrict it to two.
6. It is understood that a human birth is a rare opportunity for a jeeva to get and it is only out of pure past merits it is obtained. It is more so to be born as a Brahmin. A jeeva which could be an insect or a plant to reach a higher level of existence at the next birth requires ‘’sadhana’ to achieve. How it is possible for them to do a ’sadhana’ being what they are?
7. At the state of Mukti, what do we experience?
Awaiting clarifications.
With kind regards and seeking blessings.
N. Srinivas
Dear Shri Hari,
I have two questions:
1. What is the authentic source of reading Puranas? Is Gita Press, Gorakhpur a good source? When I enquired the Press has only 12 Puranas.
2. How many Upanishads are there? Is there authentic any source (publication) where I can get them?
With Best Regards,
Raghavendra
THE AUTHENTIC EDITION OF PURANAS WAS NIRNAYA SAGAR PRESS, MUMBAI. NOW IT IS GORAKHPUR PRESS. UPANISHDS ARE MANY IN NUMBER. 10 ARE PRINCIPAL UPANISHADS COMMENTED BY ACHARYAS. THERE IS ONE ALLOPANISHAD ALSO WRITTEN DURING JEHANGIR’S TIME. VEDIC UPANISHADS ARE NOW ONLY TEN WITH A FEW OTHERS LIKE SHVETASHVATARA AND NARASIMHA TAPANEEYOPANISHAD WHICH ARE RECOGNISED BY ACHARYAS.
NAmaskara Shri HAriprasad ,
I have got some readers getting serious and obsessed with KArna post . In an ecstasy to disprove the postings , foolish dogmatic persistence exists in such comments .
Although it does not warrant to answer these comments , but It would not be correct to leave them thinking we have ignored them .
squarely talking the same point over and over again does not resolve such arguments .
If you feel this as not an intrusion into your daily activities , and if you can spare a bit of time for us .
I invite you to be a member of jury on this site
http://chiraan.wordpress.com/2009/05/17/superiority-of-arjun-vis-a-vis-karna-a-debate/
you can also suggest few more neutral members .
Kindly post you comment as acceptance of jury membership on the above post .
Thank you
regards
Chiraan
My daughter was born in Ashlesha nakshatra. The astrologer has asked us to preform ashlesha bali at kukke within 2years of daughter’s birth. When the ashlesha bali should be preformed? Should i book for this pooja in advance with the temple or can we staight away go to the temple ? What are the rituals to be followed during ashlesha bali ?

Hi Hari,
Absolutely a delight to read your blog, espcially the complete Kukke Subramanya details.
Request to kindly let me know,if reaching Kuke by train from Blr by 6AM & then doing Ashlesha Bali is feasible,(I understand this requires about 2 hrs maximum & is done along with many other people who are doing the same ),does it require any prior booking ? after this would you suggest to go to Dharmasthala & be back by 7PM same day,as we intend to take the night train back to Bangalore.Dec 20th 2009 ,we intend to be there, hope its not any spl. day/major rush?
Kindly suggest.
Namaskara Sri Raghavendra,
The writeup on Ekadashi will certainly happen, but I am not sure how soon. Will certainly try to do it at the earliest.
Many thanks!
