The planet of benevolence
I thought of posting another blog in the series of “Gods in popular culture” but I am going to deviate a bit from that topic. I will attempt to post my views on one of the Navagrahas – Shukra or Venus. Amongst practicing Hindus, Shukra is one of the most misunderstood planets (along with Shani- Saturn, I must add). Anything good that happens in a person’s life is attributed to Shukra and anything that goes wrong is due to Shani.
While its true that Shukra in general represents the material side of one’s life, what it can grant depends completely upon its strength and more importantly the houses it lords. For example, if an exalted Shukra is the lord of say the 8th house or Randhra Bhava, the 20 years of Shukra’s ruling could potentially be very troublesome. Of course, there could be other alleviating combinations present but I am talking about a simplistic scenario just to make the point. Thankfully, Shukra cannot rule two dusthanas at the same time. For that matter, no planet can rule two dusthanas.
Another line of thinking is that the mahadasha of planets can only give high level directions to one’s life. Its the antardashas that really bring out the results. This is especially true for planets whose dashas run a long time. As for the antardashas, one will have to consider the planet’s placement from both lagna and the moon to predict any results with certainty.
A majority of astrologers that I have come across lack the dedication (or knowledge itself, maybe) to get into the analysis of planets in detail and make only superficial predictions. So far example, any problem, whether its related to health, conjugal life or career, that occurs in the dasha of a malefic, is due to that malefic. And anything good that happens in the dasha of a benefic is due to that benefic. Further,
another mistake, according to me, made by some astrologers is trying to predict everything based just on the Rasi charts. While its true that the Rasi chart has an overriding say in the direction that a particular aspect can take, its insufficient for accurate predictions. Using the vargas yields the best results. A third common aspect neglected is that of Arudha Padas. In my experience, astrologers dismiss Arudha Padas just because they didn’t care to learn them.
Let me use my own case as an example. I have been running the vimshottari mahadasha of Ketu, a rank malefic (according to some), for seven years now. I am supposed to have only problems in my life 
Even minor health upsets are due to Ketu. It does not matter that Ketu sits in my Karma bhava, unaspected by any planet (except of course, by Rahu). Here is my attempt at analyzing my Ketu dasha (note that I am not getting into the effects of antardashas at all – just high level).
(a) Lord of Ari Bhava – hmmm……:-)
(b) Occupies Karma Bhava in Mulatrikona in Meena – gave me above average success in career.
(c) Resides in a sign where Upapada Lagna falls – gave me marriage.
(d) Resides in Dharma Bhava when counted from Moon – boosted my interest in spirituality immensely. Ketu is a Moksha karaka anyway.
It gets even more amazing if I get into antardashas but my post will become a manual so I will resist.
Depending upon which Ayanamsa I use (Lahiri Ayanamsa or the new Vishnu Nabhi Ayanamsa introduced by Sri PVN Rao), I will enter Shukra’s dasha somewhere before the end of the year. Here are the factors I am considering while analyzing the dasha.
(a) Shukra sits in Labha Bhava in Rashi (and 10th from moon). In my hometown, Labha Bhava is also considered the ‘Deva’ bhava.
(b) Shukra is the lord of Putra/Mantra Bhava and Vyaya Bhava.
(c) Shukra is yuti with Kuja (and aspected by Shani). There is no graha yuddha or planetary war but they are fairly close. Also, A3 and A2 are in the same house. Bashers of Arudha Padas, guess what? 90% of my foreign visits in the last 7 years have occurred in Shukra’s antar/pratyantar dashas.
(d) Shukra is more than 46 degrees away from Sun. Bit of a free reign – eh
(e) Shukra aspects my Putra/Mantra bhava. The house also has A7 and A8.
(f) The most interesting placement of Shukra in my charts is in Navamsa. Debilitated in Kanya in the 8th house. Some scriptures say its a lost cause. According to others debilitated planets in dusthanas are equivalent to exalted planets. Shukra pratyantardasha gave me marriage, so I tend to side with the latter. It happened in Ketu (Mahadasha with UL) – Guru (Lord of seventh in Rasi and placed in 7th in Navamsa) – Shukra (natural karaka) – Guru. If Shukra was outright weak, the pratyantardasha should have been different.
(g) Shukra owns the Matru bhava and Dharma bhava in Navamsa. So my analysis in (f) better be correct
(h) In Dasamsa, Shukra owns the 7th and 12th bhavas and sits in 12th in Tula. According to Pandit Sanjay Rath, 12th in Dasamsa indicates expenses,foreign and freedom in career. This probably backs the point I made in (c).
(i) In Vimsamsa, Shukra owns the 5th and 12th again. Placed in 11th again and unaspected.
(j) In Siddhamsa, placed in 4th in Vrishchika and owns 3rd and 10th.
In summary, you will see that there are too many factors to consider in order to make a balanced judgement rather than a blanket prediction.

Nice you found it interesting. At this stage, I am still a learner. At the least, I am several months away from making accurate predictions. Currently, I risk it only with my friends as I need practice with charts.
But, just like the astrologers I mentioned above, I should be able to tell you very easily what your “good” and “bad” dashas are and whose causing all the ups and downs in your life

Without one’s DOB, place of birth and exact time, it is not really fruitful exercise to study horoscopes. In fact, just interpreting the position of one planet is probably going to bring out disastrous predictions
But, interestingly, you have the same Lagna and Shukra placement as me. Shani though is not in Mesha, but he does aspect it (10th house aspect).

Nice to see a post completely influenced by Jhora Group. But a simple fact you have missed is ketu has been in a rasi where venus exalts. Planets give dasha results not just on debilitation and exaltation but primarily on vimsopaka bala. debilitation and exaltation merely contributes to strength of the planet. a good result of a planet in a partcular dasha or antadasha is also due to the moons sign on the day of its start. \if moon is in vrushabha or tula when dasha/pratyantara starts , irrespective of benefic or malefic , it gives marriage or association witha women desired.

One last note : Planets give results only as per scriptures prescribed , and not as per astrologer’s logic and understanding. So every prediction should have backing of scriptures.
BTW shukra is yogakaraka for mithun lagna , yogakaraka however it may be placed gives only good results.

12th lord is a neutral lord, does not have any independent say ,they act according to association. Fifth lord is now dominant because it is mooltrikona for venus. when a planet owns two houses , mooltrikona house stalls the effect of the other, Thus venus becomes yogakaraka.
venus alone is the yogakaraka for gemini ,moon is the killer,so says parashar;

Many thanks for that detailed explanation. Actually, I was limiting the definition of Yoga Karaka to simultaneous ownership of a Kendra and Kona – and calling owner of Kona as “functional benefic” or “Shubha”.
According to my understanding of BPHS, any planet owning a Kona becomes a Shubha, even if he owns a dusthana – except if the dusthana is the Moola Trikona of the planet. That is how Shukra is not a Shubha graha for Vrushabha Lagna and Shani is not a Shubha for Mithuna Lagna (in spite of owning Dharma Bhava). Kindly let me know if this is right.
Also, with regard to Ketu (and Rahu), they give results either that of their Bhavadipathi or Bhava itself. Do we also have to take into account the Karakatva of the planet which may get exalted in the Bhava they occupy? In that case, can Ketu also deliver results like a debilitated Budha if he is in Meena.

If we take the definition of yogakaraka as quoted by you,then Mithun lagna will not have any yoga karaka at all. also conjucntion of jupiter and saurn does not give results for mithun lagna . but we have many rulers born in mithunlagna , then in that case which dasa should be yogakaraka?
sometimes you migh observe when you go to the sasural of your friend , even you are accorded a very good reception , and everybody expects info about your friend through you.So you become proxy.
similarly ketu allows venus results to flow unobstructed being in meena, in its antardasha.
ketu gives results according to the bhavadhipati or association whichever is stronger.
it will not give results of budha in meena, but all budha related relations will not be cordial during ketu dasa, you dont like people from the place which is repelling to you,[like bihari budhas are not liked by jupiter marathi in ketu dasa(MNS) ,but venus gujarathis are welcome in mumbai]

Very interesting post. Your explanation of yogakaraka is very lucid. Incidentally , my lagna is also mithuna and I am running ketu dasa. after reading your post, I clearly understand the concepts. My ketu is in dhanus and venus in gemini with rahu,sun, mercury and venus.
Since venus is the yogakaraka for mithuna lagna as fifth lord aslo with fourth lord lord, how will my next venus dasa be.

More than venus your Rahu has shot to beneficience in giving results. Venus dasa Rahu antara will see you at your peak . However that is general result. it wil be immature to comment without birth data.
venus in general with fourth lord as fifth lord brings celebration in the house, purchase of grains ,vehicles and social felicitation. in your case one of your uncles will shoot to prominence in this period and will be of immense help to you. You will frequent clubs and befriend a muslim lady .
i cannot go beyond this in absence of data.

I appreciate you for opening this blog disussion on astrology. I find yours as well as Shri Chiraan’s articles are quite interesting and throwing light on doubts.
If any planet is in dusthana or associated with malefic planets it is said during their mahardasa or anterdasa troubles/problems are bound to occur. BNut in some cases same may turn to be beneficial if it is neecha banga yoga.
In my horoscope (DOB: 09.03.1961 TOB:04.30 PM POB: Bellary) lagna is kataka , moon is in vrischika (neecha sthana), jupiter is in makara with sani, ketu is with ravi and budha in 8th house and venus is in 12th house while rahu is in 2nd house and kuja in 10th house.
Whether during ravi/moon/jupiter/venus mahadasa or antardasa because of their position/strength/affliction does any harm or problems arise.
Please throw light in this regard.

Is there any classical reference for neech bhanga , except mantreshwara. A neech planet gives neech results only, else we will have to extend the case to ari bhanga , mitra bhanga and uchcha bhanga which are not heard of.
however sixth debilitation, eigth lord debilitation gives raj yoga provided they have some connection with ascendant ,and ascendant lord is srong, Three planets or more debilitation will also give raj yoga .
but these are raj yogas that indicate grabbing not happiness.
all planets when propitiated give benefic results , you cannot attribute it to bhanga.

I would consider Mantreshwara as a good reference. But I don’t think Parashara or Jaimini talk about Neecha Bhanga (I may be wrong).
I consider Neecha position as a house of discomfort. Hence the planet may deliver results more on the negative traits it signifies. Neecha bhanga may reduce the “discomfort” in a sense and consequently the extent of neecha results.
Just like how mere exaltation doesn’t guarantee excellent results, can’t a similar explanation be used for neecha bhanga, given that it is also mentioned by Mantreshwara?

Mantreshwara ,does not quote any reference for his conclusions,even parashar and Jaimini quote Bramha naradadi matam, wherever there is dilemma, but here it is a self styled interpretation.which cannot be accepted.Neither is he accorded rishi status in any puranas.
Debilitation and exaltation are states of planet , in a life human undergoes various state , owing to different palnets ,but planets act even in sukshma for few hours every day. A man with a debilitated planet faces anxious moments everyday even if it is for few hours.
e.g Madonna ,went to a restaurant , ran into a hefty bill ,suddenly she realised she had not brought her purse or any instrument,, she was saved by one of the strangers ,just to overcome her embrassment and ego,she kept sending free cds of her album to him for many years.
debilitation acting ……it makes one helpless irrespective …. of status

One of the books revered by a lot of astrologers in Dakshina Kannada is “Jataka Phala Saroddhara” by Sri Kabyadi Srinivasa Acharya. It is a sort of compendium of the sutras of multiple Jyotish Granthas.
In that book, Sri Acharya quotes “Jataka Adesha” and gives a very similar description of Neecha Bhanga Raja Yoga. I do not have Jataka Adesha with me nor do I have any more information on it but that’s one more source for the topic.

To asses the efficacy of the planet during dasa period which has to be considered mainly – strength of the dasa lord or antardsa lord. Which will be more accurate and proper. Is there any other factors that influnce the result other than dasa lord or antardasa lord during dasa period.
If a planet in the chart is afflicted or in association with malefic planet but in gochara it is in favourable place or uccha sthana or vice versa, what will be the result. Which has to be taken into consideration primarily for prediction purpose.
Please offer your opinions.

Shri Babu your question is interesting, instead of answering technically let me give example that would simplify the explanation.
A king goes on a hunting expedition,there he finds a tribe performing vishnu pooja , he was offered prasad ,he brushes it aside and sets for his kingdom, immidiately he confronts his wellwishers ,who advice him not to go towards capital,as enemies have surrounded ,
King goes back to tribals and accepts prasad , he regains his kingdom.
here antara was powerful malefic ,
Maharastra CM (new) will hold post for few months , antara very powerful benefic.
Since dasha was stable in both cases ,effects are temporary.
if antara is weak, there will be news like Rane being declared but not made.
Ghatotkacha had to be killed by shakti of Karna , because he was momentarily invincible for that moment.
Dasha powerful antara weak, powerful fellow suddenly feels powerless for a day.a king in disguise of ordinary man.
Dasha weak antara powerful, a common man rising to prominence.
this explanation is not fully exhaustive there are many subrules yet .

You have mentioned about Venus lord of 8th in exaltation gives many problems in its dasa.
What about Venus exalted in 8th?
